Awake / like the ocean / but the water / it is still Wait in the open / we’re not broken / we’re not scared Away from the motion / the commotion and the fear

I brought my one love / down to the ocean / we kicked our shoes off / walked hand in hand We saw the great ship / they call “Misfortune” / be torn asunder / there on the sand And as the ground shook / and all the fires burned / I felt her hand slip / away from mine That was the first day / I saw the devil / The very same day / God closed his eyes

about

Two months isn’t a whole lot of time. If someone were to have told us that we’d have written and recorded a full-length album in that time, we’d laugh them out of the room. Yet somehow, two months later, the project that tempered our spirits and hung over us like the sword of Damocles has finally reached its end. Songs for Apollo is a full-length LP comprised of twelve tracks written, recorded, and produced by two medical students in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless of where in the world you’re reading this from, you’ve undoubtedly been bombarded with news and social media posts surrounding this crisis. For those reading this in 2020, some of the things you’ve read on the news or have experienced personally have undoubtedly shaken you up, whether that be loss of income, fears for the health and safety of yourself and loved ones, depression stemming from social isolation, or any number of other challenges. Whatever it is you're facing, you’re not alone. Six tracks on Songs for Apollo (7 through 12) were written about these very things. Each song touches on one of six “dark things” we’ve all seen or felt at the hands of this pandemic. They’re emotionally charged, energizing, agonizing, and cathartic and we hope that you feel a bit less alone in your emotions after listening to them. To stigmatize these thoughts or emotions, to bury them under the weight of social acceptability, is wrong. Emotions can be real, tangible things, and locking them away is a disservice to the brain that conceived them. The other six tracks (1 through 6) embody the positive aspects that have arisen from pandemic. Like the “dark side”, each tune on the “light side” tackles one of six silver linings, such as a heightened sense of community or moments of peaceful solitude. They’re uplifting, meditative, and encouraging. Above all, they speak to the adage: a little bit of solidarity goes a long way. For those looking to do some introspection (and, of course, Conscious Uncoupling superfans… do these exist?), you’ll find that every track on the album is accompanied by a small written piece where we delve into the nitty gritty of how and why we wrote the song, what we wrote it about, and what we hope you’ll gain from listening to it.

Suffice it to say, 2020 has been a wild and bumpy ride for us all. If you’re in a dark place, we hope that these tracks help bring some calm into your life – even if only momentarily. Regardless of where your mind sits, we hope that these songs inspire you to introspect in your own way, whatever that might involve. If you like what you hear, give it a download, share it with friends and family, and reach out to us to let us know. This album is free and will remain as such forever. We weren’t paid to make this, and we won’t accept donations. Before we go, we’d like to address the album title: Songs for Apollo. Although we didn’t write these songs for the ancient Greek god per se, we’ve kept him in mind over the past few months. Who better to receive such an homage for these endeavours than the god of music, healing, and plagues? Regardless of how much ancient Greek deity runs through your blood, we hope you too enjoy Songs for Apollo. We certainly enjoyed making it.

Yours Truly,
Conscious Uncoupling
